Can't beat experience - badgers and geology

It was in 1970 as a young geology student that Ron Allen teamed up with Bob Cowlin of the Essex Badger Group to try and explain why badgers in southeast Essex were more common in some areas than others. We published our results:

"The Badger in Relation to Geology in South-West Essex"

in The Essex Naturalist, the journal of the Essex Field Club, in 1971 (41 years ago!) concluding that sett density closely correlated with specific geological conditions.

George E Pearce in his recent book on badgers (Badger Behaviour Conservation & Rehabilitation - 70 Years of Getting to Know Badgers 2011) also makes observations on badger setts and geology indicating how sensitive badgers are to their geological environment.
