SUDS

Sustainable Drainage Systems.

Sustainable Drainage Systems are all about drains. Not any old drains, but drains that help reduce surface water pollution and prevent contamination of our rivers and wetlands.

And, as our recent storms have shown, the need for SUDS which reduce the flow to rivers are of the utmost importance.

SUDS take surface water from our roads and urban areas, remove much of their pollutant load and discharge cleaner water to groundwater or streams.

Many of the ideas are not new, but now, local authorities are demanding them in new urban developments.

But what are they?

There are many different kinds including:
  • Permeable pavements which absorb water close to source.
  • Swales which are wide, shallow, grassy ditches that both filter and store water.
  • Infiltration trenches and basins which also store water but pass it gently into the ground.
  • Detention ponds which retain water before controlled discharge to streams and not only prevent flooding but can form wetland wildlife habitat themselves.

SUDS are at the forefront of protecting water resources
and we have the expertise to help you provide them.

The Environment Agency want them.

Planning Authorities are demanding them.

and

Land Developers are increasingly having to provide them.
